Keeping a Goldfish

February 22, 2010
Posted in Pet Advice, Pet Care — Written by Jamie

If you have ever been to a fun fair and had a go at some of the games offered on the stalls, such as the coconut shy or hoopla, then the chances are you have won a goldfish. As a child, the goldfish can sometimes form one of our first memories of owning a pet. When you take the goldfish back home there are a few things you need to bear in mind to ensure it remains happy.

The thing about goldfish is they are actually available in a range of colours, and not just gold. If you take a look at the many varieties of goldfish available to buy as a pet, there is quite a selection. Once you have purchased the goldfish you can make use of online pet stores which offer a number of interesting accessories as well as supplying its stock of food to keep your fish healthy.

You should ensure the tank where you keep your goldfish is as big as possible. This will allow your fish to grow to its natural size and give it room to swim and also a wide surface area to come up and breathe.

Make sure you change the water in the tank regularly and buy the right kind of pet food supplies for your fish. You can find suitable flaked food online that will keep your fish in good health.

Get a scratching post for your cat

If you are a cat owner you will already be aware that cats do like to scratch – and this can include anything and everything! Scratching, for cats, is a natural and enjoyable thing for them to do. So, in itself, it is certainly not a bad habit. But if you value your precious new furniture then it is a good idea to train your cat to only scratch on a scratching post.

Scratching posts provide cats with an alternative to scratching items of furniture, the carpet and various other possessions and they come in a wide range of types and sizes. These posts can be placed beside any furniture where they usually scratch, and then you can train them to use this instead through the use of rewards.

You can find a scratching post that is ideal for your cat and its size. As most cats like to scratch upright while standing on their back legs, this selection is essential. You can opt for a vertical-standing scratching post or you may wish to get climbing apparatus which includes a scratching post. Cats love to climb and hide, so the platforms and tunnels can create a kind of activity centre for your cat.

Whatever kind of scratching post you choose, it should hopefully do the trick, providing entertainment for your cat while preventing your furniture from being damaged further.

During the winter, we still need to exercise our dog. Although it might not be very appealing going outside for a walk when it’s cold and miserable, your dog will appreciate the exercise and it can also do you the world of good.

In some instances, you might be walking your dog when it is going dark. It is so important to keep in mind yours and your dog’s safety when you are out walking, that a dog coat that is reflective makes other users of the footpath or road aware of you.

A reflective dog coat is comfortable for your dog to wear, as well as protecting them from the rain and wind and making you visible at all times. Even if you aren’t walking your dog when its dark, it makes them a lot easier to spot whilst out walking in the hills or in the park.

The high visibility jackets from New Petlife Dog coats are made from the highest quality high viz material and are 100% waterproof. The coat also contains a thermal layer and the adjustable straps make it very easy to fit the coat to your dog.

No matter where you are you need to pick up your dog’s poo. Not only can you be fined if you don’t pick up after your dog, it can also lead to a big mess in the park or on a public footpath.

The company Arms Length has brought out an inventive tool, which helps to collect up your dog mess. It is much more convenient for you, as well as being easy to assemble and to use. Its clever design means that you will never have to bend down to pick up your dog’s poo. It is also lightweight and easy to carry whilst you are out walking your dog.

If you aren’t bothered about picking up your dog’s poo yourself, you can buy The Eco Bag Dispenser. You won’t ever forget to take a doggy bag out with you again with this handy device.

All pets deserve a treat from time to time. However, it is not appropriate to give pets the treats you would give to a human. This is because human treats can make your pet ill. Pets have their owns treats which have been specially developed just for them.

In particular, some of the treats that you give your pet also make sure that their teeth and gums remain as healthy as their body. Giving your pet a treat such as this on a regular basis ensures that they won’t get any gum disease or problems with their teeth.

One great product to help look after your dog’s teeth is Sherleys quality wrapped natural chews. These chews are made using the highest quality rawhide, which helps to maintain a healthy set of teeth on your dog. Not only that, they also taste really delicious and they will be a source of entertainment for your dog for hours if not days. These wonderful dog chews come with large knots on the end so that your dog can get a grip with their paws and chew on it until their heart is content.

If you have pet fish, then you’ll know that keeping them clean and happy in their fish tank is a must. In addition, you need to make sure that you are feeding them correctly and that the food you are giving them is suitable for the type of fish that they are.

If you haven’t had a pet fish before, you need to do your research before you head to the pet shop to buy one. You will need to buy an adequate sized fish tank. If you are buying tropical fish, you will need a pump to make sure that the water is filtered. This is very important. Tropical fish may also need the water temperature to be at a certain level so you will have to need to purchase a heater than can keep the water temperature at a steady level.

Once this is complete, all you need to buy is the food. There is different food for tropical and cold-water fish. This is because they come from different environments where the food sources are very different. Cold water fish are generally fed fish flakes such as Aquarian or Tetrafin. Whereas tropical fish although they will eat tropical fish flakes, also eat pellets, wafers and some like to be fed from a food in a water column.

If you got a rabbit or guinea pig for Christmas, you’ll have been spoiling them over the festive period. When it comes to keep small animals you need to make sure that you have all of the essentials.

A hutch is a necessity if you are keeping rabbits or guinea pigs. Not only to do they need shelter when it is cold but also acts as a refuge for them when the weather starts to get a bit warmer. Most hutches come with two compartments. The first is a closed off part where your rabbit or guinea pig can go to sleep or have a rest, with another meshed section where they can eat their food or have a drink as well as hop around to their hearts content.

The hutch size should be relative to the size of the animal, although your bunny rabbit might be small now, they will grow over the coming years and you need to make sure their accommodation is big enough for them. When you bought your rabbit or guinea pig, you will usually get told how big they will grow to. This why hutches come in a variety of sizes so be sure to buy the right size for your new pet.

Most dogs need to be taken out for a walk on a daily basis and you will be used to them rolling in anything they see, jumping through muddy water and running through long grass. By the time you get home, they need a soak in the bath to get all the dirt off them. Dog hair is very absorbent and it can take a very long time to get them dry once they have been in the water. Most dogs dislike the sight of a hairdryer, so why not invest in a special towel for your dog.

The Out Moisture Absorbing Pet Towel can be used on any animal, not just your dog. This fantastic towel can be used to mop up spills or accidents on carpets, wooden or stone floors or in your pet’s cage. It is great for drying off your pet after they have been in the bath because it pulls the wetness out of your pet’s coat.
