5 Tips for looking after your pet

June 17, 2010
Posted in Pet Advice, Pet Care — Written by Matthew

The majority of pet owners aim to make their pets as happy as possible. As long as you follow the basics, this task should be very easy to achieve. Pets are very much like humans, in terms of needs. To be a responsible pet owner, it is important to understand the needs of your pet and do your best to satisfy those needs.

Below are a few simple pointers to help ensure your pet is happy.

Sleeping

Having a nice snooze is very beneficial for pets. It enables them to recharge their batteries. Therefore it is important to supply your pet with a comfortable bed. This should ensure your pet has the right conditions in which to get a restful sleep.

 Travel.

Most pet owners will have to travel with their pets at some point in time. Therefore it is important to make sure your pet is comfortable during transit. For dogs and cats there are specific carriers and crates that you can buy. Furthermore there are special travel calming products that can be purchased. These can be useful if your pet gets very anxious whilst travelling and can prevent sickness.

-Pet Food

Everyone loves to eat good food and enjoy a nice meal. Pets are just the same and they too have their favourite foods. There are many different brands on the market including James wellbeloved, Iams, Royal Canin, Eukanuba, all offering different varieties of pet food. As a general rule of thumb, value brand food usually contains more fillers and bulking agents, with less meat in the formulation. This usually means you will have to feed more of it, to ensure your pet is getting the right nutrients. However sometimes a pet will turn their noses up at certain foods. Therefore choosing one they will like can be trial and error.

Grooming.

Most pets love to receive attention, and therefore grooming is something which they can really enjoy. There are some really great products on the market which help the average pet owner to make sure their pet looks in top condition. Products like the Furminator are innovative new products which help to take the hassle out of removing excess hair from your dog and cat. People will definitely notice when your pet looks like a million dollars.
Pet Toys

Pets love to have fun and remain active. Providing them with relevant toys can make this a lot easier. There are many different pet toys on the market ranging in budget and durability. Pets need mental and physical stimulation to remain healthy and happy.

Top tips for cat owners

  • Cat should live in dry, warm places. If their environment is cold and wet, this can cause health problems.
  • Cat should have the ability to hide when they feel scared and anxious. If they are unable to hide, then it can cause anxiety problems.
  • Cats can be very territorial animals and as a result they can become very emotionally attached to certain places. New environments with unfamiliar smells can cause distress and anxiety.
  • Cats are very intelligent creatures. Cats like many other pets, need lots of physical and mental stimulation. If they fail to get this, then they can suffer.
  • Cats by their very nature are very inquisitive animals. It is always prudent to make sure there are no potentially hazardous items left about your house, which could cause injury to your cat.
  • Cats require easy access to a litter tray. This should be located as far away as possible for their food and bed.
  • If you have more than one cat in your house, then it is best to supply enough toys, beds and hiding places for all your cats. This prevents fighting and enables them to get away from each other when they feel scared.
  • If you are travelling with your cat, or taking them to a new place, then it is best to use a secure cat carrier & when you arrive, introduce your cat gradually. Putting familiar smelling items in the cat carrier can help your cat feel at ease when travelling and re-locating
  • Cats require the freedom to run, climb, jump, stretch and exercise when they feel like it. If you have an indoor cat, then you could consider purchasing a cat activity centre, which are ideal for keeping your cat stimulated. These products can be purchased from any decent pet supplies shop
  • If you are going on holiday, always try to find someone to look after your cat.
  • Cats tend to feel safer the higher up they are. For this reason it is a good idea to make sure your cat can reach a high place where it can rest: Shelves for example are great for this purpose.
  • A funny thing about cats is that if you move house, they actually may try to get back to their old home. Therefore it is usually best to keep them indoors for 1 to 2 weeks after you move.

Maintaining a good relationship with your dog

We all love our dogs and want to spend as much time as possible with them. However problems can occur if a dog becomes overly dependent on human attention and get it all the time whilst they are with us. To steer clear of these potential problems, the following guide will provide some tips:

-You should be the one to decide when you want to interact and play with your dog. Interactions with you dog can be made more exciting with the use of dog toys and dog treats etc.

-Start interactions and play with your dog whenever you like, but it is best to ignore them when they are demanding your attention.

-You should be the one to choose when you want to stop interacting with your dog. This includes stroking, talking to and playing with your dog.

-It is also a good idea to give your dog a sign or indication that you want to stop playing by saying a word such as ’stop’ or ‘enough’. This will let your dog know that you have had enough, you should then try and ignore them for a while. They should soon become passive again. It is best to continuously use the same word so your dog quickly learns the meaning behind it.

-When you arrive home from work it is best to only greet your dog if it is calm and in a relaxed state. If your dog is overly excited, it is best to ignore them until they settle down, and then proceed to greet them.
These tips try to ensure that you are the one to decide to touch, talk and generally interact with your dog. This doesn’t mean you should ignore your dog the majority of the time, but it should ensure that you have continuously positive interactions with your pet whenever you want to, when your dog is calm and relaxed. This ensures that you remain in charge and have a greater level of control over your dog. These tips should also ensure your dog becomes confident and able to handle life on their own, when you are not in the house. These tips should help to stop your dog becoming overly reliant on you for reassurance and give them the ability to cope whilst on their own.

If you have ever been to a fun fair and had a go at some of the games offered on the stalls, such as the coconut shy or hoopla, then the chances are you have won a goldfish. As a child, the goldfish can sometimes form one of our first memories of owning a pet. When you take the goldfish back home there are a few things you need to bear in mind to ensure it remains happy.

The thing about goldfish is they are actually available in a range of colours, and not just gold. If you take a look at the many varieties of goldfish available to buy as a pet, there is quite a selection. Once you have purchased the goldfish you can make use of online pet stores which offer a number of interesting accessories as well as supplying its stock of food to keep your fish healthy.

You should ensure the tank where you keep your goldfish is as big as possible. This will allow your fish to grow to its natural size and give it room to swim and also a wide surface area to come up and breathe.

Make sure you change the water in the tank regularly and buy the right kind of pet food supplies for your fish. You can find suitable flaked food online that will keep your fish in good health.

Get a scratching post for your cat

If you are a cat owner you will already be aware that cats do like to scratch – and this can include anything and everything! Scratching, for cats, is a natural and enjoyable thing for them to do. So, in itself, it is certainly not a bad habit. But if you value your precious new furniture then it is a good idea to train your cat to only scratch on a scratching post.

Scratching posts provide cats with an alternative to scratching items of furniture, the carpet and various other possessions and they come in a wide range of types and sizes. These posts can be placed beside any furniture where they usually scratch, and then you can train them to use this instead through the use of rewards.

You can find a scratching post that is ideal for your cat and its size. As most cats like to scratch upright while standing on their back legs, this selection is essential. You can opt for a vertical-standing scratching post or you may wish to get climbing apparatus which includes a scratching post. Cats love to climb and hide, so the platforms and tunnels can create a kind of activity centre for your cat.

Whatever kind of scratching post you choose, it should hopefully do the trick, providing entertainment for your cat while preventing your furniture from being damaged further.

During the winter, we still need to exercise our dog. Although it might not be very appealing going outside for a walk when it’s cold and miserable, your dog will appreciate the exercise and it can also do you the world of good.

In some instances, you might be walking your dog when it is going dark. It is so important to keep in mind yours and your dog’s safety when you are out walking, that a dog coat that is reflective makes other users of the footpath or road aware of you.

A reflective dog coat is comfortable for your dog to wear, as well as protecting them from the rain and wind and making you visible at all times. Even if you aren’t walking your dog when its dark, it makes them a lot easier to spot whilst out walking in the hills or in the park.

The high visibility jackets from New Petlife Dog coats are made from the highest quality high viz material and are 100% waterproof. The coat also contains a thermal layer and the adjustable straps make it very easy to fit the coat to your dog.

There is nothing worse than an inconsiderate dog owner. If you have a pet dog, it is your responsibility to clean up after them if they make a mess in the street. No matter where you are you need to pick up your dog’s poo. Not only can you be fined if you don’t pick up after your dog, it can also lead to a big mess in the park or on a public footpath.

If you don’t fancy getting your hands on the poo itself, there are a few things that you can purchase to make the task a little easier and less unpleasant. The company Arms Length has brought out an inventive tool, which helps to collect up your dog mess. It is much more convenient for you, as well as being easy to assemble and to use. Its clever design means that you will never have to bend down to pick up your dog’s poo. It is also lightweight and easy to carry whilst you are out walking your dog.

If you aren’t bothered about picking up your dog’s poo yourself, you can buy The Eco Bag Dispenser. You won’t ever forget to take a doggy bag out with you again with this handy device.

Giving a healthy treat to your pet

All pets deserve a treat from time to time. However, it is not appropriate to give pets the treats you would give to a human. This is because human treats can make your pet ill. Pets have their owns treats which have been specially developed just for them.

In particular, some of the treats that you give your pet also make sure that their teeth and gums remain as healthy as their body. Giving your pet a treat such as this on a regular basis ensures that they won’t get any gum disease or problems with their teeth.

One great product to help look after your dog’s teeth is Sherleys quality wrapped natural chews. These chews are made using the highest quality rawhide, which helps to maintain a healthy set of teeth on your dog. Not only that, they also taste really delicious and they will be a source of entertainment for your dog for hours if not days. These wonderful dog chews come with large knots on the end so that your dog can get a grip with their paws and chew on it until their heart is content.
