Putting your dog on a diet can seem like an easy task, but many dog owners find it difficult to stop overfilling their dog’s bowls,  and to stop providing numerous dog treats and leftovers. However if your dog is overweight it will be in their best interests to reduce the amount of body fat they have to carry around. Severely overweight dogs can be susceptible to numerous health problems.

However whilst putting your dog on a diet, it is important to supply them with food which is nourishing, provides all the essential vitamins and minerals, as well as the right levels of protein. It is often suggested that a diet containing at least 25% protein is required in order to help maintain a lean body and help support a dog’s immune system. It has been shown that lean muscle burns more calories than fat does. Therefore helping to maintain your dogs muscle tissue, is vital when trying to help them lose weight. When a dog looses significant amount of muscle mass, then their metabolic rate can be altered, which in turn means that they a expending less calories. It is said that over half of a dog’s dry matter is made up of protein.

There are a variety of different light dog foods on the market from brands such as Iams, Eukanuba, James wellbeloved, Royal Canin and more besides.

It is important to remember that diet or light dog food products are usually designed for normal adult dogs that are overweight. There are not designed for puppies or pregnant dogs.

Points to consider when choosing cat food

The cat food that you choose for your cat can play an important role in overall health and vitality. There are numerous types and varieties of cat food available on the market, with pros and cons for each product. Making sure that you get the right food is important for maintaining the health of your cat. Some people however choose to simply buy the cheapest cat food on the market to reduce their expenses and because they believe all these products are essentially the same. However premium brand manufacturers claim that you need to feed less of their food when compared to cheaper alternatives. This does make choosing cat food very difficult, as costs are not as easy to calculate as they may seem.

It vital that pet owners buy food that is safe but also encourages the growth of their cat. The cat food that you choose can also have a significant impact on your cats skin, eyes, coat and fur and other physical appearances. The food that you need to buy will be dependent on the life stage of your cat. As the nutritional requirements will vary, depending on their life stage. Thus when you purchase a cat food, it is important to make sure that you check the life stage it is recommended for. For example the health and vitality of your cat could be adversely affected if you give kittens’ food, which is marketed for senior cats.

Another factor in determining what food to buy for your cat is lifestyle. Lifestyle plays an important role in deciding the food you should give your cat, as the food you should give to an active/inactive, indoor/outdoor cat, will be different and contain different levels of micro and macro nutrients. You will need to consider if your cat is suffering from any particular medical conditions. If your cat is allergic to certain foods, or has a more serious medical condition, then it is best that you consult your vet before buying cat food, as there may be a certain prescription diet that your vet may decide will be best for your cat.

There are some pet owners who find it difficult to decide whether to feed their cats dry or canned foods. Dry foods are generally considered to be better for your cat as they may be better for improving the health of teeth and gums. However, there are many cats that enjoy eating canned food as it is easy to chew. When providing your cat canned food, it is important to make sure your cat consumes their food within thirty minutes. If they don’t consume their food within thirty minutes, then it is usually best to throw it away.

Here at GJW Titmuss we stock a wide variety of pet supplies, including food, toys, collars, beds etc from top brands.

How much should I be feeding my cat?

February 1, 2010

Many cat owners get themselves worked up over the type and amount of pet food they should be feeding their adult cat. In reality, there is no definitive answer to this question as it can depend on the feeding habits of the cat in question.

Some cats are provided with wet cat food from an early age and prefer this all the way into adulthood. Other cats are given dry food in the form of pellets and they can be perfectly happy on this, as long as plenty of water is made available to them. The dry food should contain plenty of meat protein for the cat and you should ensure it contains everything the cat needs in order to maintain a balanced diet.

When it comes to the amount you give your cat, just make sure you monitor the health of your cat, so it remains active and doesn’t become overweight. There is no set amount to give your cat, but you should pay attention to the guidelines offered by the pet food supplier. You can supplement the food with cat milk and occasionally giving the cat some chicken, as long as it is broken up into manageable pieces.

Just remember to feed the cat at set meal times, possibly twice a day and help to get the cat into a routine. Monitor your cat’s food intake and make sure they are given the right balance of food in terms of nutrients and quantity.
