Five Popular Tips for Caring For Your Chickens

January 24, 2012
Posted in Pet Advice, Pet Care, Pet Food, Pet Supplies — Written by Harry

If you want to collect fresh eggs in the back yard every day then you are ready to buy yourself a few chickens. Raising chickens can be very fun as well as productive. Chickens don’t require as much attention as other farm animals, so they are the perfect animal to raise if you don’t have a lot of time on your hands. Here are five popular poultry products which make raising chickens that much easier.

1. Chicken Feeders:

Chicken feeders are different from other animal feeders. Chickens like to perch while they eat, but they can also eat without perching. Most feeders will not have the perching option for your chickens. They simply hold an ample amount

of grain and feed, sasasssas which comes down to the bottom and into a tray that extends out about an inch. You can adjust the amount of food that comes down. The feeders have several separators to keep the chickens from standing in their food and scratching it out where unwanted pests like rats and field mice can come and eat the food and make a home close by. Most feeders are for indoor use or for undercover use unless they have a lid to protect the food from becoming wet.

2. Chicken Feed:

Your chickens need to have a balanced diet in order to produce healthy eggs so what you put into your chickens will ultimately wind up on your plate. Chickens need both feed and grit in their diet. The feed provides vitamins and nutrients like calcium for better egg production and the grit cleans their craw so they can digest their food with ease. You can also allow your chickens to run freely on the property and use the poultry feed to supplement their diet. Chickens can eat table scraps, vegetable peelings, wilted vegetables, soured milk, cores of apples, or rice. There are many supplemental poultry products to help your chickens maintain their health.

3. Chicken Houses:

Chicken houses can vary in shape, colour, and size. There are many options to choose from. The basics of a chicken house should include a roof, roosting pole, and one or two laying boxes inside. You can attach any size chicken yard to the chicken house in order to allow your chickens to wake up and step outside for some fresh bugs and grubs.

4. Chicken Pens:

Chickens can become easy prey for a cat, dogs, or foxes, so it is important to give them a closed in pen that will allow them to run around during the day, get out of the sunlight when it is too hot, ample room to set their food and watering pan, and portable so you can move your chickens around every couple of days. There are different designs of chicken pens available on the market.

5. Health Products

Yes, even chickens need health products from time to time. Products such as cider vinegar can help protect your chickens against molting, eggshell strength, decrease respiratory complications, Coccidiosis, worm burden, as well as feather pecking. You can also buy liquid feed supplements that when poured over the food or mixed in water the chickens will natural drink the medication. Most of these liquids contain vitamins such as iron or phosphorus which can boost their appetite and give them added vitamins they may not have.

Once you have these poultry products you can then order your chickens and begin raising them for a healthier lifestyle.

Looking after your pond in the winter months

Looking after your pond

During the colder months it’s really important to make sure your pond is well looked after. If your pond is covered in snow it will be too dark under the ice for plants and algae to create oxygen and go through the process of photosynthesising. You need to sweep away as much of the snow as you can to allow the light to reach the plants, do this as carefully as possible as you don’t want to disturb them too much.

Most pond wildlife will survive winter without any problems, as long as the pond is oxygenated completely. Breaking the ice on a pond doesn’t really make much difference to the oxygen levels as oxygen diffuses into water very slowly. Unless you stir the water in some way, with a fountain or a pump, you’ll add very little extra oxygen. However, for fish you need to keep some circulation going if you want to get them through the winter. Keep a bit of the ice open, run a fountain, and make sure the pump continues to work. It’s not certain if snow on the pond causes any issues to the fish, but it should get a bit more oxygen into the water if you clear it.

The harrowing news about  two police dogs that were left in a car to die from overheating has caused a stir in the pet world. The two dogs, a German shepherd puppy and a working Belgian Malinois, died tragically, after being left in a private vehicle at the Metropolitan Police training unit in Keston. Temperatures rose to 30C (86F) on Sunday and it would be far too hot for any pet left in such conditions.

This case highlights the need for all dog owners to be much more aware of the dangers of leaving their pets in a vehicle without ventilation for any length of time.

“It can take as little as 20 minutes for a dog to die and temperatures can rise to above 40 degrees in some vehicles”. Guardian

The advantages of cat scratching posts

As almost all cat owners will know, cats truly love to scratch; unfortunately they can often scratch the most inappropriate things. Even though a cat’s claws can be trimmed, it is not actually suggested that you remove them completely as cats in fact really enjoy scratching and it is a type of entertainment for them. As soon as cats learn that they have claws, a cat owner will start to see the damage to their, chairs, wallpaper, table legs, carpets and other fixtures and fittings which they can damage. This is where cat scratching posts come in handy.

Cats really love to climb on things such as beds, kitchen work surfaces and tables. They also like to hide inside cupboards and under beds and under other furniture. Scratching posts are available with platforms and other special nooks and crannies. This basically creates a very exciting activity centre for your cat. This provides valuable exercise for your cat, but furthermore it enables you as the pet owner to keep an eye on your cat to prevent your home being ruined.

Therefore locating a cat scratching post which your cat really likes to use and which genuinely enthrals them is critical. However this can be quite a tricky task indeed. A good start is to look for behavioural patterns within your cat to see when they like to scratch. It is usually good practise to place your new cat scratching post in an area where your cat will normally scratch furniture or next to their preferred chair. If however you are still finding it hard to persuade your cat to use the post, then there are certain scratching posts on the market which contain catnip, which should entice your cat to use the post. Scratching posts can be purchased from any good pet shop.

Points to consider when choosing cat food

The cat food that you choose for your cat can play an important role in overall health and vitality. There are numerous types and varieties of cat food available on the market, with pros and cons for each product. Making sure that you get the right food is important for maintaining the health of your cat. Some people however choose to simply buy the cheapest cat food on the market to reduce their expenses and because they believe all these products are essentially the same. However premium brand manufacturers claim that you need to feed less of their food when compared to cheaper alternatives. This does make choosing cat food very difficult, as costs are not as easy to calculate as they may seem.

It vital that pet owners buy food that is safe but also encourages the growth of their cat. The cat food that you choose can also have a significant impact on your cats skin, eyes, coat and fur and other physical appearances. The food that you need to buy will be dependent on the life stage of your cat. As the nutritional requirements will vary, depending on their life stage. Thus when you purchase a cat food, it is important to make sure that you check the life stage it is recommended for. For example the health and vitality of your cat could be adversely affected if you give kittens’ food, which is marketed for senior cats.

Another factor in determining what food to buy for your cat is lifestyle. Lifestyle plays an important role in deciding the food you should give your cat, as the food you should give to an active/inactive, indoor/outdoor cat, will be different and contain different levels of micro and macro nutrients. You will need to consider if your cat is suffering from any particular medical conditions. If your cat is allergic to certain foods, or has a more serious medical condition, then it is best that you consult your vet before buying cat food, as there may be a certain prescription diet that your vet may decide will be best for your cat.

There are some pet owners who find it difficult to decide whether to feed their cats dry or canned foods. Dry foods are generally considered to be better for your cat as they may be better for improving the health of teeth and gums. However, there are many cats that enjoy eating canned food as it is easy to chew. When providing your cat canned food, it is important to make sure your cat consumes their food within thirty minutes. If they don’t consume their food within thirty minutes, then it is usually best to throw it away.

Here at GJW Titmuss we stock a wide variety of pet supplies, including food, toys, collars, beds etc from top brands.
