This is part 2 of ‘tips on caring for a new puppy’. Here we will quickly summarise a few of the most important aspects of owning a puppy.
Worming
It is recommended that puppies are regularly wormed from around three weeks of age. Again always check with your breeder for the details of your puppies worming history. If you have any questions it is best to contact your vet, who can supply advice.
Vaccinations
It is recommended that as soon as you bring your puppy home, you should register him with a vet. A vet will then proceed to give your puppy a comprehensive full body check-up. They will also recommend a set of vaccinations unless your puppy has already had them. It is always prudent to double check this with the breeder whom you purchased the puppy from. It is vitally important that your puppy has been fully vaccinated, as common disease can be very serious for puppies, as their immune systems haven’t fully developed. Furthermore kennels will only accept dog which have valid vaccination certificates.
Pet Insurance
Taking our pet insurance is a decision every dog owner has to make. There are many companies on the market which offer pet insurance and the costs involved vary greatly. If this is a route which you are going to take, then it is a good idea to do some comprehensive research, as some policies offer a much greater amount of cover than others. It is important to note that sometimes routine vaccinations are not covered by pet insurance policies, and some policies require an excess to be paid. However it has been said that people are more likely to claim on pet insurance than their car insurance.
Neutering
You will need to discuss this with your vet, who will be able to give you some expert advice. Neutering is usually carried out before a puppy matures.
Microchipping
There are companies out there who offer this service. Microchipping basically involves a permanent microchip being inserted under the skin of your dog. This means that if your dog is lost or stolen then it is possible to return him to his rightful owner. It is estimated that half of dogs who are lost or stolen never get returned to their owners. Every week in the UK, there are around 7,500 pets which get microchipped. Again this is a decision each and every pet owner has to make.

Bringing your new puppy home for the first time
The task of caring for your puppy starts as soon as you get him home. The experience of moving to a new environment and different surroundings can confuse and startle your new puppy. So you have to make sure he feels as welcome as possible. As is expected, the rest of the family will probably want to meet the new arrival; however it is a good idea to make sure he doesn’t feel uncomfortable or threatened, so it is best not to crowd around him, as he may feel intimidated.
Furthermore it is prudent to remember that he will probably be tired and very nervous; therefore it is a good idea to be extra vigilant around a new puppy. Always make sure children are gentle and don’t frighten the new puppy. During the first few weeks he may have a few accidents and slip ups. It is important not to reprimand him if he has been naughty as he will be adapting to his new environment. The early years of a puppy’s life are vitally important in terms of development.
During the first few days of bringing the puppy home, it is usually suggested that you don’t let him meet other animals or pets. This again may startle or frighten him. When your new puppy does finally meet other pets, supervision is always suggested.

Our GJW Titmuss wheatgerm pellets are great value and provide all pond fish with the correct levels of nutrients in a highly digestible form. Our wheatgerm pond food contains all of the ingredients required by fish during the colder autumn and winter months. During this period fish are less active and need food which won’t just sit in their gut.
What is wheatgerm?
Wheatgerm is the extremely nourishing heart of wheat grain. It provides a high quality source of protein, which is simple to digest too.
Goldfish, Koi carp and other pond fish are cold blooded. This means that their body temperature if controlled by the temperature of the water. During the summer months when water temperature is higher, fish become more active and therefore need more food. During this period they are able to digest high protein pond food. Some summer or growth pond food has protein levels in excess of 45%. However during the colder winter months when water temperatures are around 8-12°C, a fish’s metabolism will slow down and they will require less protein. Our Gjw Titmuss wheatgerm pellets have a protein level of 28%
If for example you decide to use some left over staple or growth pond food from summer feeding, the fish will not be able to digest the higher levels of protein and therefore a large amount will get excreted as ammonia. In large quantities this is toxic to your fish.
To summarise, wheatgerm pond food enables pond fish to eat a diet which works in conjunction with their lower protein needs. This leads to a healthier pond with less ammonia and healthier, happier fish.

Animals are great companions and provide us with love and affection. However you need to pay attention to their diet. Human food is rarely suitable for pets. Formulating the right kind of diet for a pet is a complex task. Sometimes it is easy to forget how important diet is for a pet.
There are particular types of pets that would not eat anything other than what their species have always eaten. However with the more common pets such as cats, dogs etc, they will generally eat whatever the owner puts in front of them. The trouble lies in the fact that many pet owners haven’t got the time to prepare the right food in the right quantities from real food. This is where formulated pet food comes in. The best thing a pet owner can do is to buy quality pet food that has been formulated especially for that animal.
Every pet owner should be aware that that various sub-species and breeds can also have different food needs. For example koi carp have different requirements to common goldfish. Likewise a Labrador will have different nutritional requirements to a miniature schnauzer.
Choosing the correct pet food?
When purchasing a new pet, it is important that you check what food the breeder or previous owner has been feeding that particular animal. As changing a food suddenly can cause stomach problems. However if you continue feeding the food that the breeder/vet has been recommending and you don’t think your pet is doing particularly well on this, then it may be worth changing the food. If you gradually change food over a number of weeks then there shouldn’t be any problems. A good measure to see if your pet’s current food is suitable for your pet is to check the weight and development of you animal. Moreover checking your pet’s stools is sometimes a very good indicator of health. Stools which are too soft can sometimes indicate food intolerances or allergies. If you need some expect advice, always consult your vet.
Feeding Quantities
It is always prudent to follow the instructions located on the pet food packaging, as quantities do vary between manufacturers. Super Premium pet food brands usually claim that you feed less of their products compared to cheaper value alternatives. This is due to the fact that these super premium brands are more ‘nutrient rich’ that cheaper alternatives. Furthermore it is wise to be careful when giving treats to your pet, as they may become overweight.

There are numerous ways in which exercise is of benefit to your dog. It keeps their joints supple, reduces body fat and enhances mood. However sometimes exercise can seem boring, for both the dog and owner. This is where dog toys come in.
Exercising is vitally important for all animals. Domestic dogs enjoy a very nice existence; they get lots of food, a nice warm place to sleep and protection. However it is important that exercise needs to be maintained. Your dog will be at their happiest when they are in peak physical condition. This means not carrying around lots of extra weight.
In order to make sure that your dog keeps the weight off, there are various dog toys on the market which can aid this task. In terms of exercise, nothing beats a nice long walk; however this can get a little boring sometimes. There are toys such as various ‘fetch’ dog toys and ‘retrieval’ toys on the market. These are great to take with you on long walks. There are also other ‘tug’ dog toys and chewy toys which are great when used indoors. These not only keep your dog active, they also provide mental stimulation too.
The added benefit of dog toys is the fact that many can help improve oral hygiene also.
The best way to use dog toys is to make sure your dog is getting time to play with them each and every day. If you take the toys to your dog and just let them chase them, chew on them, bark at them, play tug of war with them and generally have fun. After they have finished playing with their toy, it is usually a good idea to take it away so they don’t lose there appeal too quickly. It is also very important to monitor your dog whenever they play with dog toys, just in case your dog tries to swallow them or starts to choke.

If you have a pet cat, you surely love it a lot. Having a pet cat is like having a sibling at home. Just as it is your duty to take care of your siblings, it is your responsibility to take care of your cat.
If you have managed to keep a cat as a pet, you need to know how to take care of it. Unlike your siblings, cats cannot express their feelings through words. However, it is your duty to take care of them and grant them everything they need.
You have to learn to take proper care of them by giving them all the attention they need, so that they live as long as possible.
Know- how about cats
• Cats that live indoors tend to live between 20 and 22 years.
• Make sure that you give your cat healthy meals throughout the day. Do not under feed them.
• Make sure that your cat is involved in a little physical activity. Make the cat move around if you find it lazing around throughout the day.
• Brush your cat’s fur on a regular basis and as often as possible. If you fail to do so, the hair become loose, forming hairballs which can then get stuck in your cat’s throat choking it.
These tips are the most basic tips. Performing these duties is not rocket science. Being a cat owner brings a lot of responsibilities. Performing these duties will help your cat to live longer and will leave you a happier person too.
