Posted in Pet Products — Written by Lewis

We all need to take our pet to the vet from time to time. They might be going to have their annual vaccinations, to have a routine check up or to even go in for something more serious.

Transporting them there can be a bit of a nightmare. Most pets dread the day they are put into the car and taken to the veterinary surgery. One of the best ways to get them there and back safely and securely is by using a pet carrier box. Pet carriers come in a wide range of sizes. Some are perfect for carrying smaller pets such as guinea pigs or a rabbit, to large carriers, which carry cats and small dogs.

To get your pet used to going into the pet carrier box, why not introduce it into their daily routine. These carrier boxes can be utilised as a cat or dog bed. This way it reduces their anxiety before their visit to the vet.

Making the carrier comfortable for your pet will make the journey to the vet more enjoyable. Most pet carriers come with a padded cushion and water bowl to ensure that your animal is hydrated during the journey.

Keeping fleas at bay

With the weather generally becoming wetter and colder, there couldn’t be a more perfect time to treat your pet for fleas and ticks.

One of the best ways to treat your pet if they have fleas is to apply a spray or lotion, which kills the flea. Some of the lotions come in a shampoo form, which can be used to prevent as well as kill any fleas that your animal might have. This is particular useful for dogs who spend a long time outside and might have picked something up whilst having their daily walk. However, it is particularly difficult to shampoo cats or other domestic pets. To help here, you can buy sprays, drops and collars for your animal to wear.

Drops are put on the animals fur and it repels the flea from attaching itself to your animal’s body. However, this is generally not as strong as other methods of preventing fleas and could be ineffective. If used properly however, drops can be given to your animal over a period of 4 to 12 weeks. The drops contain a formula containing repellent oils and extracts including eucalyptus and citrus. Drops are perfect for cats.

Having your pet vaccinated is one of the most worthwhile things you can do for your pet. Vaccinations provide some reassurance that they won’t pick up anything nasty when they are out and about roaming the street or out for their daily walk.

Some people fail to vaccinate their dogs and cats, this results in them becoming poorly and can prove costly when it comes to vet bills later in life. Although it is entirely the owner’s decision to vaccinate their pets, it is advisable. Many pet owners will deliberate about whether or not to get their pet vaccinated. They will weigh up the pros and cons of having it done. Although it is not common, pets can have an adverse reaction to the vaccine. If you are concerned about this, you should discuss it with your vet.

Pets are vaccinated against worms, cat flu and many other diseases, which can kill dogs and cats very quickly if they catch them. Most vets will advise about which vaccinations your pet needs and when you need to vaccinate your pet. They will keep a record of what vaccinations your pet has received over its lifetime.

Getting a puppy for the first time

When you buy a puppy there are a few things that you need to purchase before bringing your new dog home.

It is always worthwhile going around your home and moving items which you don’t want to get chewed or damaged whilst your puppy is still small. Puppies are renowned for chewing and eating anything in sight so it is advisable to put valuable items out of reach.

You will also need to decide on a space in your home for the puppy to sleep. Getting your puppy in a regular bedtime routine is always best, starting from an early age. It is generally not a good idea to have them sleep in the same room as you. Normally most puppies and dogs sleep in the kitchen or utility room. Giving your dog its own personal space from an early age gives them a space where they can go and not be disturbed if they have had enough.

Most people use a cardboard box as a bed as it is likely to be chewed in the first few months. After they have stopped this chewing habit, you will need to invest in a good dog bed or basket for them. Consider the size that your dog might grow to in the future and whether the room that they sleep in is warm or cold. You don’t want your pet to be too cold at night.

Grooming your pet

Whatever pet you might have, whether it is a dog, cat or rabbit, they will need to be groomed.

There are a variety of products on the market, which can help you in this task. Grooming products include brushes, combs and gloves, which can be used to make your pet look tidy and presentable.

Before you begin to groom your animal, they will need to be bathed and washed to ensure that their skin and fur is clean in preparation for grooming. There are specialist shampoos for different animals, which have been specially produced to clean them thoroughly. Using shampoo for humans is not advised when shampooing your dog or cat because they are often heavily perfumed and might irritate the skin.

Once their fur is dry, position the animal comfortably on your knee or on a work surface and then start to brush through their fur firmly but carefully, ensuring that the brush or comb does not snag. You don’t want to hurt them. Work your way all over their body; don’t forget their stomach and the insides of their legs as well as their ears and face.

Once finished, your pet will be smelling and looking clean and tidy.
