Ensuring your pet has a good nights sleep

December 30, 2009
Posted in Pet Care — Written by Harry

Every pet needs to have a special place within their home where they will find their bed. Your should locate your pet’s bed somewhere warm, free from draughts and somewhere where they can escape to when they have had enough.

Often, if you pet doesn’t like where his or her bed is put, they won’t keep in it and they’ll end up on the sofa. You need to actively encourage your pet to use their bed as much as possible. You might have to move it around the house a couple of times before you find the right place that suits them.

In addition to finding the right spot, you need to make sure that your pet is warm and comfortable enough when they are in bed. Dogs like to feel secure in their bed, which is why the Rectangular Softee Dog Beds are perfect for any dog.

A beautifully soft faux suede softie bed is a stylish bed, which is hardwearing as well as stain resistant. This bed will help to keep your dog warm and comfortable when they go to bed at night and the thick base cushion can be thrown into the washing machine at your convenience.

Drying your pet off after their bath

Most dogs need to be taken out for a walk on a daily basis and you will be used to them rolling in anything they see, jumping through muddy water and running through long grass. By the time you get home, they need a soak in the bath to get all the dirt off them. Dog hair is very absorbent and it can take a very long time to get them dry once they have been in the water. Most dogs dislike the sight of a hairdryer, so why not invest in a special towel for your dog.

The Out Moisture Absorbing Pet Towel can be used on any animal, not just your dog. This fantastic towel can be used to mop up spills or accidents on carpets, wooden or stone floors or in your pet’s cage. It is great for drying off your pet after they have been in the bath because it pulls the wetness out of your pet’s coat. You can even use this product to get any pet hair off your furniture or clothing. It is so versatile and is a great investment for your pet.

Taking your dog on holiday with the family

December 11, 2009

If you are travelling with your family around the European Union, you can now take your dog with you. Provided they are up to date with all of their vaccinations, your dog will be able to travel around with you and enjoy some summer sunshine with the family.

However, you might be wondering how on earth you are going to get your dog from A to B without any mess in your car. The most convenient and practical way to transport your dog on holiday would be to purchase a dog carrier.

Dog carriers are typically made from metal or plastic and come in a range of sizes to accommodate almost any size of dog. You will no longer have to worry about getting dog hair all over the back seat of your car. Most dog carriers fit easily into the boot of your car and there is enough room for them to move around and feel comfortable whilst you are on your journey.

Your dog will need to have plenty of water for the journey so that they don’t get dehydrated on the trip. You will need to stop at regular intervals during the journey to let your dog go to the toilet and stretch their legs.

Keeping hens in your garden

December 10, 2009

With the credit crunch hitting home quite hard for most families, many people are looking at alternative ways for feeding their family. Although most people don’t have enough space to keep a whole farmyard of animals, almost everyone could accommodate a few hens in their back garden.

Hens are really easy to keep at home and if they are well looked after you can expect to harvest approximately 300 eggs per year. Hens like to have company so it is worthwhile investing in a couple of hens. Any spare eggs that you have you could swap with friends who are growing other types of produce. Hens also make for a great pet and are easy to care for. If you want to your hens to reproduce, you will also need to buy a rooster.

Hens need to have a secure pen to live in, with enough space to roam and scratch around. These can be made from chicken wire and wood. They like a roost as well, but you could use a converted rabbit hutch.

Hens need to be fed a balanced diet that generally consists of wheat and corn, although they will eat certain vegetables such as lettuce and are great for using as pest control in your garden. One of their favourite things to eat is a slug. You’ll be reaping in the free-range eggs in no time at all.

Feeding your pond fish during the winter

December 8, 2009
Posted in Pet Care — Written by admin

When it comes to caring for your pond fish during the winter there are a number of things you need to check before the weather turns cold. If your pond is less than 20 inches deep, it is at risk of freezing and with it your pond fish.

You need to ensure that your fish have plenty of water to swim in, even if the top of the pond might freeze after a particularly chilly night. Over the winter, your fish will eat very little. This is because the temperature of the water in your pond controls their metabolism. They will not be as active as they are usually in the summer.

During the summer, pond fish need plenty of protein to keep them active. This is obtained through the fish food that you will be putting into the water. However in the winter they do not require as much protein, which is why specialist winter food for your fish has been developed. This specialist food contained wheatgerm, which contains all of the nutrients that your fish will need to survive the winter months.

Brushing your pet

December 6, 2009
Posted in Pet Advice — Written by Jamie

Grooming your pet is vitally important; not only to prevent your pet’s hair from getting all over your house but also to make sure that their fur and body is in a good condition.

You should be brushing or combing your hair on a daily basis regardless of what type of animal you have. Brushing will help to get rid of any dead hair and detangle any clumps of hair that has matted. It also helps to distribute your pet’s natural oils throughout their body, which keeps their fur looking healthy and glossy.

Your pet will get used to being groomed on a daily basis. You should be praising their good behaviour whilst they are being groomed.

There are different types of brushes for different types of pets and hair. A wire or pin brush is better for long straight hair or hair which is dense. A grooming mitt is helpful when it comes to grooming cats because generally their hair is much shorter than other domestic pets. If you pet is prone to tangles in their hair, you can buy specialist detanglers to get rid of any knots in their fur.

How to groom your pet

December 4, 2009
Posted in Pet Advice — Written by Harry

When it comes to grooming your pet, it should be done on a regular basis. This is the same no matter what sort of pet you have, whether it is a dog, cat or gerbil. It should never be left until your pet’s hair is matted or knotted.

Part of your routine when it comes to grooming your pet, especially when it comes to dogs is to give them a regular bath. You can buy specialist shampoo to cleanse the skin and hair of your pet. It would be advisable to get them into the bath tub, however if this isn’t possible a bucket of warm water will do or the kitchen sink. Make sure that you lather your pet’s fur. Buy a shampoo that has a repellent for ticks and fleas could prove useful.

When grooming it is worth taking this opportunity to clip their toe nails. If you start this at an early age, it won’t bother your pet at all. You could also try your hand at clipping your pet’s fur if you are feeling brave enough. Although seeking specialist advice might be the best option in this instance.
