Pet Food Labels–What they tell you.

September 28, 2010
Posted in Pet Advice, Pet Food — Written by Lewis

The labels used on pet food products gives you the general information about the ingredients used in the product and in what quantities. This information supplied is required by law and you will find this on all pet feed labels. The ingredients are listed in descending order with the most used ingredient listed at the top. These labels also provide you with the nutrient analysis, feeding information and sometimes the key benefits of the product along with the manufacturer details.

Additives Used

There are usually 2 kinds of additives used when producing animal food products.  These include ingredients such as vitamin A,E and B along with Iron, calcium and various amino acids. These are added to ensure the food is well rounded and nutritionally balanced.

On the other hand ingredients like BHA, ethoxyquin , BHT or mixed tocopherols are added at very low levels as antioxidants in order to prevent the ingredients going off and becoming inedible . These antioxidants have been approved for use in pet foods and human foods by the (FDA) and the (EU). Other Preservatives like potassium sorbate and sorbic acid are added to some wet pet foods in order to stop spoilage. Again these ingredients are approved and certified safe for both pet foods and human food products.

Furthermore specific flavourings are also included in order to help make pet foods more appetising to cats and dogs. Some may be listed as artificial flavour or natural flavours. Ingredients such as onion, garlic, yucca and rosemary can also sometimes be used.

Artificial colours are also sometimes used in cheaper dog foods at very low levels in order to give the product a more attractive and consistent appearance and/or to distinguish between flavours used in the same product. Colours used in pet foods are the exact same as those used in human foods and have been approved by the EU and FDA.

General Feeding Guide

Pet feed labels should also point to whether or not the product is a complete balanced food or whether it is a food supplement. It should also specify what life stage(s) the product is aimed at, such as Puppy, adult or senior.

Feeding Instructions

Instructions regarding the amount to food you should feed your pet should also be included on the label. These directions are a ‘rule of thumb’ and a general guide. You only really get an idea as to the amount needed by trial and error, as all dogs are different in terms of activity levels, metabolic rate etc.

Eukanuba video guide to puppy nutrition.

September 11, 2010
Posted in Pet Advice, Pet Products — Written by Harry

It is known that puppies grow their fastest during the first few months on their lives. Eukanuba puppy food products are formulated to match the requirements of different breeds and sizes of puppies, to help to ensure that your puppy gets off to the best possible start in life. All of their puppy products contain proven ingredients that supply the optimum nutrients in order for optimal health in growing puppies.

Key ingredients:

DHA (Fatty Acid)

DHA is an Omega-3 fatty acid vital for neural development. DHA is an important structural element of the brain, as well as one of the most plentiful fatty acids in the brain. It plays a vital role in the development of the central nervous system and the function of the eyes. Dietary DHA is significant for optimal neural development in puppies due to the fact that DHA production in the body is limited. Puppies fed on food with improved levels of DHA had superior trainability performance and generally better overall health and vitality.

Protein

Frequently used protein sources in pet food include meat, fish and vegetables, maize, soybean meal and sometimes gluten. The main role of protein for puppies is to supply the body with amino acids. This serves many important functions, including building hair, skin, tendons, nails, muscles, ligaments & cartilage. It has also been shown that protein also plays an important role in hormone production and is vital to overall puppy health. Dogs are best fed as carnivores, as they need to have a good supply of all essential amino acids.

When should you feed wild birds?

September 8, 2010
Posted in Pet Care, Pet Products — Written by Matthew

Feeding birds during the winter is really the most beneficial time to do so. As food shortages are more likely to occur. However feeding birds throughout the year is even better, as food shortages can still occur during the summer. Furthermore if the birds can gain weight during the summer, then they are more likely to survive during the colder autumn and winter months.

Spring and summer months

During the summer months, a wild bird’s diet will be slightly different than during the colder winter months. This is especially true whilst the birds are moulting. They usually require a diet higher in protein.

It has been suggested that you should stay away from providing peanuts, household fat waste, fat balls and bread during this period, given that these can pose potential problems if adult birds feed them to their young. (However having said that, some people still feed peanuts and fat balls at this time without any problems at all.) If you feel you want to put out peanuts at this time, then it is best to put them in a suitable metal/plastic mesh peanut feeder designed for that purpose. This ensures that large pieces of peanuts don’t pose a choking hazard to the birds.

Short term food shortages can happen at virtually any time of the year, and when this happens during the summer breeding season, supplying additional food in your garden can make a huge difference to the survival of the young birds.

Wild birds time their breeding activity to coincide with the accessibility of natural food products, such as caterpillars, earthworms etc. However it has been noted that when the weather turns cold or wet during spring or summer (this is Britain after all!!), acute shortage of insect food can arise, and if the weather is unusually dry, then earthworms will not be able to penetrate the hard soil at the surface. This is when the supply of wild bird food comes in handy.

Products to feed during the warmer spring, summer months include: sunflower hearts, Oatmeal, Groats, raisins/sultanas, mealworms and seed mixtures are all great foods to feed during this time. Some fruits such as apples, grapes and banana’s can be a welcome addition too.

Autumn and winter months

During the autumn and winter months, it is advisable to put out food and water on a regular basis. However during really bad weather, wild birds are best fed twice daily. Once in the morning and then again in the afternoon/evening.

During this period, wild birds want high energy or foods high in fat, such as peanuts, sunflower hearts or suet treats.

It is best to always establish a regular routine, so that the birds will become accustomed to the meal times. Furthermore it is very important that you never leave uneaten foods to build up around the feeders or trays.

Products to feed during colder months: Peanuts, Sunflower hearts, black sunflower, fat balls, safflower seed, niger seed, suet treats/cakes, high calorie seed mixtures.
